Individual activities
The following activities are to be completed individually. The reason that these activities are to be completed alone is because they involve watching videos, writing journal activities, and taking quizzes. You may ask your peers for help, but all of the activities are thoroughly explained within the activity descriptions. Many of these activities focus on your own personal health and reflecting on your personal lifestyle. These activities should be done silently in order for you to explore the digestive system on your own!
These four activities are required. Please complete the following:
1. "Digestive System" Brain Pop Video and Vocabulary Sheet
Click HERE and print out the vocabulary worksheet. Print out the worksheet. Then, fill-out the worksheet while watching the video. This video provides you with all of the parts of the digestive system. You may want to watch this video a few times in order to soak in all of the information. After you watch the video, consider the following questions:
-What new information did you learn?
-What did you find most interesting?
-What would you like to learn more about?
After watching the video, choose an additional term from the video to define. Place the worksheet in your portfolio once you have completed the activity
2. Label Parts of the Digestive System
Click HERE and print out the diagram provided on the main page. Next, using the internet or your textbook to guide you, label the parts of the digestive system. Are you able to point to each organ of the digestive system and describe its function? Watch the BrainPop video again if you need a reminder of the function of each organ. Once you have completed this activity, place the worksheet into your portfolio.
3. "Your Digestive System" and Quiz
Click HERE and read the provided article.
-Was there any new information that was not explained in the BrainPop video?
-Would you like to investigate another point further?
Be sure you can provide a peer with a summary of what you just read. Once you are confident that you are familiar with the material, take the quiz. Print out your results and put it into your portfolio.
4. Review and Assessment Study Guide
Turn to page 93 in your textbook Human Body Systems: Interactive Science. Complete the Review and Assessment Study Guide by writing your answers on a blank piece of paper. If you need help on a particular question, review all of your assignments that you have completed for your portfolio. You may also quietly discuss your thoughts with one peer from the class.
There are eight activities listed below. Please complete four of the following:
1. Good Food, Good Health
Now, you will focus on learning about what types of food you should be digesting. Click HERE and read through the worksheet. Answer the following questions on a blank sheet of paper:
1. How many fruits and vegetables should kids eat each day?
2. Name some reasons why it's important to eat five or more fruits and vegetables each day.
3. Instead of fruits and vegetables, what is a big snack food for kids?
4. What is the average fruit and vegetable serving for 6 to 12 year olds
5. What are some of the troubling findings of this study?
Once you have answered the questions, be sure to put your answers into your portfolio.
2. "You are What You Eat"
Record everything that you eat for one day. Next, record your eating habits. Eating habits are the way someone eats. Eating habits involve the quantities of food that one consumes or the quality of food that one consumes. Eating habits also involves what types of food people eat and what time of day they eat. Then, look at a food pyramid found HERE. Are you following the food pyramid? What can you do to make your diet a healthier diet? Write a paragraph or two about how you can improve your own eating habits in order to be a healthier person.
3. “How to Become a Healthy Person” Advertisement
Once you learn about how to eat healthy, create a poster that promotes healthy eating habits. Consider what you learned from the food pyramid? How many servings of fruits and vegetables should you have? Should you avoid specific foods that belong in specific food groups? The poster can be an advertisement for a specific food group, brand of food, or healthy eating habit that other students should consider. Hang the poster in the cafeteria. When you are in the cafeteria, be sure to share your poster with your peers and explain the meaning of it to them!
4. Magic School Bus Video
You have already become familiar with how to eat a healthy diet and your body digests food from one organ to the next. Watch the Magic School Bus episode entitled “For Lunch” found HERE. Once you have watched the video, write in your journal about your reactions to the movie. Think about what surprised you, what you found most interesting, or what your think is the most important aspect of the movie.
5. Digestive System Roller Coaster
Click HERE and watch the provided short videos on the website. This video is another source that depicts how you digest food. Think about what you have already learned about each organ. What new information have you learned? Is there something that is still unclear to you? If you are having trouble with a specific concept, watch the BrainPop video again or search through what you have included in your portfolio. Next, write a paragraph explaining your reactions to the videos. Share your reactions with other group members once you have completed your journal entry.
6. Lenny’s Digestive System
Click HERE and complete the interactive activity by clicking the arrow that says “EAT IT LENNY.” Once you have gone through all of the steps, click “Take me to the exercise” on the right side. If you believe that the questions are difficult, then complete the interactive activity once more. Print out the last page of the exercise in order to document your completion.
7. The Digestive System Crossword Puzzle
Click HERE. Then, click on “Digestive System Crossword” listed at the top of the page. In order to complete this assignment, you must already be familiar with the various organs of the digestive system. You may want to use your notes from past activities are articles that you have previously read. You may also want to refer to your labeled digestive system in order to see a visual representation of the digestive system. Download the worksheet and print it out. Complete the crossword puzzle.
8. The Digestive System Fill-In the Blank
Click HERE. Then, click on the “Digestive System Cloze.” Download the worksheet and print it out. This worksheet is a cumulative assignment of everything that you have learned about the digestive system. You may refer to your notes if necessary. Fill-in the blanks and turn-in the worksheet for your teacher to check for accuracy. If you made mistakes, you may make corrections with another colored pen. Once your worksheet has been fixed, place it in your portfolio for further review.
